The Day the Sun Reached Down
Every furnace in the valley fell still. The foundries emptied. The city bells rang three times, and the light above the hills changed its shape. By dusk, figures formed of glass and living ember were crossing the old roads.
The council called them invaders. Our wardens took up their shields. No one had yet explained why flames in locked hearths moved together, or why the sky's impossible fire seemed to know each kiln by name.
